Objective

To insource and automatize the production of annual economy briefs for the Global Innovation Index (GII).1

Description

In addition to the ranking and report, the GII launch also includes the release of the economy briefs. The briefs summarize each economy’s innovation performance for the specific report year. They tailor material from the report and the economy profiles to provide insights specific to each ranked economy within the GII. A sample brief for Australia from the GII 2022 report can be seen here.

Previously, the briefs were outsourced to design firms. This process was typically resource-intensive, inflexible and error-prone. Starting with the GII 2021, I insourced the production of the briefs by adopting the Rmarkdown reproducible report system and its LaTeX output format. This involved the development of two templates: one in Rmarkdown for content derived from the GIIDB; and, another in LaTeX for typesetting. When combined, the templates rendered economy-specific content at the press of a button.

This in-house process represented a giant leap forward as it replaced external providers, streamlined our dissemination process, and enhanced our internal capabilities, all in a cost-effective manner.
