GII Sources and Definitions Appendix

Objective

To automatize the production of the Global Innovation Index (GII) Appendix on sources and definitions.1

Description

To build the GII, WIPO collects a wide array of data from a variety of sources. As such, we must cite and describe how we prepare and utilize the data for transparency purposes. The Sources and Definitions Appendix from the GII 2022 report can be seen here.

Previously, source metadata were collected in an ad hoc fashion and synthesized manually. This process was typically resource-intensive, inflexible and error-prone. Starting with the GII 2022, I developed a “sources and definitions” workflow by combining data from the GIIDB along with the Rmarkdown reproducible report system. The output produced a completed appendix ready for editing at the press of a button. A sample of the Word output can be viewed here.

This in-house process minimized errors and streamlined our dissemination process.
